What are 'V.O.C.'s in paint and why don't we want them?

Indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air, and according to the EPA, is considered to be one of the top 5 hazards to human health. Paints and finishes are among the leading causes, releasing low-level toxic emissions into the air for years after application. They poison groundwater and contain ozone-depleting contaminants.

The source of these toxins is a variety of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which, until recently, were essential to the performance of the paint.

These are the fumes that you smell while you paint, and usually for several days after. A VOC is an organic chemical that becomes a breathable gas at room temperature. Some examples of these are ethylene glycol, vinyl chloride and mercury. VOCs in paint usually come from the additives to the paint such as fungicides, biocides, color, and spreadability agents. These high levels of VOC’s in paints can cause headaches, allergic reactions, and health problems in the very old, very young, and those with chronic illness. Fortunately, new environmental regulations, and consumer demand, have led to the development of low-VOC and zero-VOC paints and finishes that are durable and cost-effective.

SLEEP & BEYOND ORGANIC WOOL COMFORTERS

We raise our own merino sheep and produce our own exclusive brand VisoniqueTM. Only nature created certified organic fibers are used in VisoniqueTM collection: certified organic merino wool and certified organic cotton, weaved in 300TC luxurious sateen.

Our organic cotton comes from India. It is certified organic according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) by Control Union, one of the oldest and most reputable independent certification organizations. Also, it is certified according to OKO TEX 100 to ensure that the cotton yarns used in production are safe for infants. The manufacturing plant is an ISO certified which ensures the fair trade labor, high quality management,
environmental and control system along with strict manufacturing process.

Our organic merino wool comes from our merino sheep that graze on mountainous lands of Kyrgyzstan, “The Switzerland of Central Asia”. Our merino sheep and organic raw merino wool are 100% certified organic and processed merino wool is certified as “made with organic” by CERES, a Germany based USDA accredited certification organization which ensures our compliance with NOP (National Organic Program) by USDA.
We have also been awarded the hard to get “WOOLMARK” certification for our pure organic merino wool filling.
The WOOLMARK specifies that a product contains pure new wool and meets or exceeds the global standards for pure wool filling. The WOOLMARK logo is recognized throughout the world as a symbol of high quality and reliability. Before a manufacturer can apply the WOOLMARK label to his products, stringent testing for quality, chemical and oil content, and product performance must comply with the high standards set by WOOLMARK.

VisoniqueTM comforters were tested on arsenic and lead content and VOC (Volatile Organic
Compound) emission. None of the chemicals or VOC’s were found in our comforters.

HOW OUR WOOL IS PRODUCED

1. Shearing
Our sheep are sheared once per year, usually in the spring time. The wool is trimmed in one piece, called a fleece.

2. Scouring
The fleece is washed to remove impurities, such as dirt, grease and dried sweat. Impurities account for between 30 and 60% of the total fleece weight. At this point, the wool is considered cleaned wool or scoured wool. The grease that is removed is considered a valuable by-product. Lanolin, in it’s purifies state, is used in creams, soaps, lotions, cosmetics and ointments.

3. Carding
Rollers covered with teeth tease apart the staples of wool, laying the fibers nearly parallel to form a soft rope called a sliver.

4. Combing
The comp separates short from long fibers, ensuring that the long fibers are laid parallel, to produce a combed sliver called top.

5. Drawing
Several tops are drawn out into the thickness of one, to thoroughly blend the wool and ensure evenness or regularity of the resulting roving.

6. Spinning
Once straightened, the fibers can be spun into yarn.

The sap is harvested in the morning, molded into sheets by the afternoon, then shipped to our manufacturer in Canada, where they are covered. NO chemicals here.

The Wool in Zia & Tia's Organic Mattresses & Mattress Accessories are organically grown. The Wool shorn from sheep that have grazed only in pastures free from pesticides & herbicides on Texel Island, off the coast of the Netherlands. The wool is washed with hot water & soap. NO detergents, chemicals, chlorine or bleach and is processed without the use of oils or bonding agents. The sheep are bred carefully, live a stress-free life. In winter, they live in a well-ventilated climate controlled barn with clean floors, fresh, dry bedding, a non-rationed food supply & a daily check of each animal. In summer, the sheep graze on land that has not been used for agriculture for 20 years, protected from any chemicals, pesticides & fertilizers. The raw fleece is sorted, washed & dried by a 100% organic process- vegetable based soaps & other agents for washing . NO chemicals or bleach. The wool fiber produced retains 4 - 6% lanolin oil; a completely natural dust-mite repellant. Our manufacturer does not permit the use of plastic, baling twine, mothballs or strong chemicals to remove impurities. Our wool batting is certified to OKO-TEX 100 through a leading German organic certification organization.
